Fatal RTC A1M J61 Bowburn interchange, Co Durham 15/07/2021

A major investigation and recovery operation is underway following a fatal collision in which three people tragically died.


The incident happened at 6.20pm 15/07/2021on the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) at Bowburn.


It involved four cars and two lorries, one of which caught fire as a result of the collision. Sadly as a result there has been fatalities and several others were injured.


A 41-year-old man – the driver of one of the lorries – has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody.


Detective Superintendent Dave Ashton, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a harrowing incident for everyone involved and our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who have lost their loved ones.


“I am appealing for anyone who has dashcam or video footage of the collision to upload the footage through this online portal”
