OPERATION EDGEFIELD - MURDER INVESTIGATION
Officers have launched a murder investigation after a man died following a suspected assault in Newcastle.
At 7.25pm yesterday (Tuesday 16th June 2026) police received a report of assault on Shields Road in the Byker area of the city.
Emergency services attended the scene and the victim – a man in his 20s – was found to have sustained serious injuries in the assault.
He was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries but sadly died a short time later.
His next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by officers.
Northumbria Police have launched a full investigation into the man’s death and three people – two men aged 24 and 22 and a boy aged 16 – have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
All three remain in police custody.
A section of Shields Road remains closed to traffic to allow for officers to carry out investigative work at the scene.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, of the Force’s Major Investigation Team, said: “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are firmly with the family of the man who has sadly lost his life.
“We will offer them all of the support we can and would ask that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.”
DCI Atherton added: “We have launched a full investigation into the circumstances around the man’s death and arrested three people on suspicion of murder.
“We would like to reassure those in the local community that our officers remain in the area to carry out a wide range of enquiries to ascertain exactly what happened.
