ATTEMPTED MURDER AT 9 DURHAM STREET 21st NOV 2025
Appeal for information in relation to an attempted murder at 9 Durham Street, Elswick, Newcastle on 21st November 2025

Officers have appealed for witnesses after an attempted murder investigation was launched in Newcastle.
At about 6.45pm yesterday (Friday 21st November 2025), police received a report from the ambulance service of concern for a woman and a man at an address on Durham Street in the Elswick area. Emergency services attended where it was understood the man and woman had been the victims of a serious assault inside a property.
The woman aged in her 60s was found to have sustained serious head injuries. She was taken to hospital for treatment where she remains in a critical condition. The man aged in his 60s was also taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries where he remains in a stable condition.
An investigation was launched by Northumbria Police into the full circumstances surrounding the report.
A man aged in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody at this time.
A cordon is in place at the scene and officers remain in the area to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance to the community.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, the Senior Investigating Officer on the case, said: “This is a serious incident which has resulted in two people sustaining serious injuries. A suspect is already in custody being questioned, and I would like to reassure our communities that we are carrying out extensive enquires to understand what has happened.”
He added: “Officers will remain in the area for some time conducting enquiries, and we would ask anyone with concerns to speak with them. We would also ask any witnesses to come forward, as any information could prove vital to establishing exactly what happened.”
