Investigation into the assault of a male on Saturday 16th August 2025 at Whiteleas Way/Nevinson Avenue roundabout, South Shields.

Officers are appealing for witnesses as they investigate a report of a serious assault in South Tyneside.

 

Shortly before 3.30pm on Saturday August 16th 2025, Police received a report of assault at Whiteleas Way roundabout at the junction with Nevinson Avenue in South Shields.

 

It was reported that an altercation had taken place between a man in a Nissan Micra and a man travelling on a mobility scooter on the road.

 

The man in the motor vehicle then got out of his car and punched the victim in the head and neck, causing him to fall to the ground.

 

Emergency services attended the scene and the victim, a man in his 60s, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries. He remains in hospital in a critical condition.

 

A full investigation has been launched by Northumbria Police into the incident, with a number of lines of enquiry carried out.

 

A man in his 70s has been arrested in connection with the report, on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

 

Norhtumbria Police are appealing to the public for information – and are keen to trace any witnesses who were in the area at the time.
