Hampshire Constabulary - Murder of Lucy McHugh

Public appeal for sightings of Lucy McHugh 9:00am Wednesday 25th July - 7:45am Thursday 26th July 2018

Details of Incident

Detectives investigating the murder of Lucy McHugh are out speaking to the local community today – a week after she was last seen alive.

We are specifically appealing to people who may have seen Lucy last Wednesday or in the early hours of Thursday, or who were in the area at that time and may have information which could help our investigation.

We also want to hear from anyone who lives in the Millbrook or Lordshill areas who may have private CCTV footage or any dash cam footage which could help us piece together Lucy’s last movements.

We can now confirm that the 13-year-old left her house in Mansel Road East, just before 9am on Wednesday 25 July.

Today, officers will be speaking to people in this area and near the Sports Centre, where Lucy’s body was found in woodland behind the top cricket pitch at around 7.45am on Thursday 26 July.

Detective Superintendent Paul Barton said:

“Members of the community have already given us lots of information and we are really grateful for this, but we still need your help.

“We’re trying to jog people’s memories today so that we can piece together Lucy’s last movements.

“Please think back to this time last week and remember where you were and what you may have seen.

“It may have seemed insignificant at the time but, knowing now what has happened, it could prove vital to our investigation.

“We specifically want to speak to anyone who was with Lucy, who spoke to her or thinks they may have seen her last Wednesday or into the early hours of Thursday. Equally, if you have any dashcam footage or private CCTV images which you think could help us, please get in touch.

“We also want to hear from anyone who may have been involved in activities at the Sports Centre on the Wednesday – if that’s you or you know clubs who were there on Wednesday, please get in touch.

“We fully understand that emotions are running high in the community, but we again appeal for people not to speculate about the details of the investigation on social media.  It doesn’t help the investigation or Lucy’s family at this difficult time.”

We would encourage people to consider the description of the clothes Lucy was last seen wearing –

- Distinctive black jacket with white sleeves, the logo for the band Falling in Reverse on the front and RADKE 01 in red on the back

- White vest top

- Camouflage leggings

- Black and white Jordan 23 trainers

Last night members of the public supported the detailed forensic searches being carried out at the Sports Centre. Led by our neighbourhood officers and special constables, they searched the areas outside the immediate police cordon in an effort to help our investigation.

We would like to remind people that if you do find anything that you think could be linked to the investigation, please contact us immediately so we can deal with it appropriately.

A 24-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of murder and sexual activity with a child. He was subsequently bailed with conditions not to enter the Southampton area.
