Early evening on Monday 16th October 1989, Richard Haywood, commonly known as Ricky, just 36-years-old, was killed in his flat above Ambiance Jewellers on Shirley Road in Southampton. To date no one has been charged with the murder of Ricky, who was shot numerous times at close range.

The re-investigation into Ricky’s murder has continued since October 2024, and advancements in forensic science over the past 37 years have yielded further evidential items which could be compared to a suspect.

In addition, the investigation team has visited many of the witnesses in the initial enquiry but have also spoken to and met new witnesses from a review of material and redeveloped lines of enquiry.

Over 300 people have been re-visited which has helped to clarify alibis and arrangements from that evening.

The review of material has established that there are still a very small number of people who were in the vicinity of Ambiance that day and into the evening who have not been spoken to at any time – is this you or a friend that you knew in 1989 that has not come forward?

It is strongly believed that this murder involved more than one person and that those involved attended Ambiance on the day and that Ricky was issued threats.
